Thermal dependence of water and electrolyte excretion in two species of lizards.

چکیده
Almtract--1. Lizards with different preferred temperatures were water-loaded, and their ability to excrete excess water and conserve electrolytes was tested at several temperatures. 2. Rates of water excretion were much less temperature dependent in lizards having a low preferred temperature, but were maximal at about 30-35°C in both species. 3. Urinary sodium levels were minimal at temperatures near the respective preferred temperature of each species. 4. Urinary potassium levels were low and apparently not temperature dependent over most of the range studied, but increased as lethal temperatures were approached.

Genetic diversity within the Iranian spiny-tailed lizards and predicting species distribution in climate change conditions
There are different methods to investigate the effects of climatic fluctuations on the biota, two of which, molecular phylogeography and SDM, are the most useful tools to trace the past climate induced modifications on species’ geographic distributions. In this study, seven samples were collected from the species distribution range in Iran for the purpose of measuring the genetic variation with...
متن کاملPrevalence and intensity of coccidian blood parasite infection in three species of lizards from Markazi Province, Iran
Coccidian (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) parasites have been reported in almost all groups of vertebrates. These parasites may cause serious ecological and pathological effects to their hosts. Reptiles were found the be the host of the parasites of the genera Schellackia and Lankesterella, as these parasites undergo their entire life cycle in the reptilian body, with an intermediate stage of dormancy ...
متن کاملThe Temperature Dependence of Myosin-adenosinetriphosphatase and Alkaline Phosphatase in Lizards.
Abs t r ac t -1 . The temperature dependence of myosin ATP-ase and intestinal alkaline phosphatase from a variety of lizards having distinct preferred temperatures was compared. 2. The ATP-ase was relatively thermolabile; reductions in activity at temperatures above the optimum resulted primarily from irreversible denaturation. However, pronounced differences were evident in both the optimal te...
متن کاملELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF U(V1) NITRATE IN CHLOROFORM AT A MERCURY ELECTRODE THE DEPENDENCE ON SUPPORTING ELECTROLYTE
The mechanistic aspects of the electrochemical reduction of U(V1) nitrate at a mercury electrode in chloroform, using three different supporting electrolytes, are described. In the presence of tetrabutylarnmonium perchlorate (TBAP) as a neutral electrolyte, UO (NO ) , reduced in two irreversible electrochemical steps to form a U(V1)-U(V) binuclear complex and U(IV), respectively. In the pr...
متن کاملThe Thermal Dependence of Lizard Behaviour
New techniques were utilized to measure burst speed and distance running capacity in six species of lizards and to examine the thermal dependence of these behavioural capacities. These behaviours were repeatable among groups of animals within a species, within a group during the experiments, and among individuals of a group. Burst speeds averaged 130 to 150 m/min for active species, with some i...
